Can You Mix Vinegar and Ammonia? (Explained)

Vinegar and ammonia- two of the most primary chemicals used in household cleaning. Now, these two ingredients are used as they are effective, and tend to clean a large area in almost no time.

Additionally, vinegar and ammonia is used and affordable. However, have you ever thought about mixing these two? Can you mix vinegar and ammonia? What happens when you mix these? If these questions are mindstorming you, then you are at the right place.

Today we are here to give you answers on whether or not you can mix vinegar and ammonia. So, bear with us till the end. Let’s get started, shall we?

Mixing vinegar and ammonia

You can mix vinegar and ammonia together. However, it is not recommended. According to the concept of chemistry, there’s a chance that these would cancel each other out. Vinegar is acidic and ammonia is basic. Therefore, they may not give you expected results.

We use multiple things in order to keep our house clean. Afterall, a clean house is a healthy house. Some of the chemicals we use are costly but don’t give the expected results.

Apart from vinegar, ammonia is largely used in DIY projects. However, when you think about mixing them you may think that it will give you better results. But, let us assure you that nothing like that is happening.

If you know one or two things, you would know that vinegar is acidic, and on the other hand ammonia is base.

Now, when acid and base come together, they produce salt and water. So, there’s a higher chance that vinegar and ammonia are going to cancel each other. And as a result, nothing will happen.

Moreover, on the safe side there is no risky chemical reaction that may take place. Additionally, you must not mix ammonia with elements like bleach. Mixing ammonia and bleach can result in chemical reactions that can cause accidents.

However, vinegar can be used with most cleaning products as it helps in whitening. Vinegar is also used to preserve food. And as it is created through fermentation there are no extra chemicals added, it is safe for consumption.

Additionally, the vinegar which is used and consumed by us, only contains a certain amount of acid in it. Most commercial brands supply vinegar that has a pH between 4-7.

However, it is still considered as a powerful chemical and you can mix water with vinegar to make an effective cleaning solution.

On the other hand, ammonia is naturally found in soil. It can be produced by making decomposed organic material. However, commercial graded products that contain ammonia have around 5-10 percent of ammonia in them.

Additionally, they must be diluted in water before using them. Therefore, you can mix vinegar and ammonia but it will be of no use.

Ammonia and vinegar mix: Does it work?

Ammonia and vinegar is most likely to not work. Now, you might be thinking why so, as they work amazingly individually. The reason behind that is, the chemical formation of these chemicals. Ammonia is basic and vinegar is acidic.

Therefore, when they come together they are most likely to cancel each other.

Which will result in leaving out water and salt due to the reaction. Additionally, your purpose wouldn’t be served.

However, you can use these chemicals for cleaning purposes. Additionally, one must ensure to use these in a diluted form. Moreover, there are certain chemicals that shouldn’t be mixed with ammonia or vinegar.

For example, ammonia must not be used with bleach. You may consider using bleach with ammonia for better results, however it is never recommended. When these two chemicals are mixed together a gaseous material called ‘chloramine’ is produced.

Additionally, it is known to be toxic and can lead to health hazards if inhaled.

Therefore, before mixing random chemicals, do your research. Other than that, you can keep in mind that mixing vinegar and ammonia might not work and bring out the expected results.

What happens if you mix vinegar and ammonia?

Vinegar and ammonia are two most essential items used for household cleaning. We use these in their diluted forms.

However, what would be the results if we mix vinegar and ammonia together? Here is what can happen if you mix vinegar and ammonia:

They will cancel each other out:

On their own, vinegar and ammonia are rather potent materials. However, there is a danger of developing chemical elements that might result in the creation of health risks if the incorrect chemicals are combined with them.

Additionally, vinegar is acidic and produced through fermentation of ethanol. On the other hand, ammonia contains hydrogen and oxygen. Ammonia is usually found in soil. Ammonia has its own wide range of usage.

Whether it’s cleaning purposes or keeping away insects, ammonia always comes handy.

Vinegar helps clean greasy products in no time. However, these chemicals need to be used in diluted forms. You should make sure to mix water with them before using.

Trying to use the concentrated form of these chemicals is considered harmful for humans. Now, when you mix ammonia and vinegar they can either create a great cleaning solution or cancel each other out. In case you’re wondering why, then let us explain it.

Vinegar is a weak base and on the other hand ammonia is a strong base.

Therefore, when combined together, they happen to react together, neutralize one another and form water. This reaction is safe for both animals and humans. Additionally, you can use this mixture to get rid of tough grease, grime, or even soap scum

Ammonia and vinegar mixing ratio

If you plan on mixing ammonia and vinegar, then make sure that you are mixing them in the same ratio.

Therefore, you’d want to mix ammonia and vinegar at the same ratio and add 2 tablespoons of water per quart of water. Or, you can mix water with each chemical separately and then combine them together.

However, before using this mixture, you’d want to take preventive measures.

Wearing rubber gloves and a mask. This protects your skin from getting in direct contact with the chemicals. Whereas, the mask protects you from any harmful fumes that may be created.

Keep in mind that ammonia must not be used in concentrated form. When in concentrated form, it can burn your eyes and flesh. Additionally, it can also create a fume that can affect your throat and lungs.

Therefore, you must use ammonia in an open space, or at least at a place where it is well ventilated.

When do you mix vinegar and ammonia together?

Using vinegar and ammonia is quite useful when it comes to cleaning various things in your house. Although they have a tendency of neutralizing on another, their own cleaning properties make their solution a strong one.

Additionally, they should have the same ratio when mixed together. Here is when you can mix vinegar and ammonia together:

Using as a dog repellent:

The mixture of vinegar and ammonia can be used as a dog repellent. If you do not want your neighbor’s dog in your yard and are looking for a good dog repellent then, you can try this.

Using this mixture is safe to use for both you and the dog you’re trying to repel. You can use a spray bottle to spray the mixture with the help of a nozzle. You would want to use diluted materials, as there’s a chance of the dog consuming it.

Also, you can use food grade vinegar, and less concentrated ammonia. You can add the mixture on areas like flower beds and trees. Additionally, where the dogs like to dig.

Using to clean windows:

You can use this mixture to clean windows or other glass in your house. You may want to use a rug, ammonia-vinegar solution, and water. For preventive measures, be sure to use gloves and glasses.

This will protect your skin and your eyes. For additional safety purposes, you can use a mask. This will prevent the toxic fumes from entering your throat and lungs.

To clean the windows, you would want to soak a piece of rug into the solution and wipe the windows with it. It does not matter how much ammonia you use as it will evaporate eventually. Then you can dip the rug into a water-vinegar solution and rub the window.

You can clean the residue with water to ensure that no vinegar remains into the window. Be sure to clean the window after you have used ammonia and vinegar on them. Leaving residues can cause mildew growth on the windows.

Additionally, in severe circumstances it can trigger skin allergies or other skin problems. Therefore, be sure to use water afterwards.

Final Thoughts

You can mix vinegar and ammonia together. No harmful reaction will be formed. However, They will neutralize each other and produce water. Additionally, they can be used as a cleaning solution. Moreover, they should never be used in their concentrated forms.
